Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, born in Long Beach California. DuVernay had a close relationship with her aunt Denise she urged DuVernay to develop her creativity and was instilled by the arts. Aunt Denise worked the night shift in the role of a nurse so that she could indulge her passion for literature and theatre in the daytime. DuVernay was brought to the movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was trained by her mother to understand that art could serve as a tool for activism. DuVernay had parents who were knowledgeable about society and taught her how to utilize the arts as a way of expression. Even though DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she always spent summers with her family in Lowndes County Alabama where her parents lived for many generations. The father of DuVernay's remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama were later the inspiration to direct a movie on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as his Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay earned her graduation certificate from Saint Joseph High School, Lakewood California in 1990. The school was home to University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay discovered a passion for the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She started as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the rubbish of one members of the juries. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism, and she decided to pursue a career in the public relations business. DuVernay was hired for her first gig as a publicist in small production studios right after graduating from college. She launched in 1999 her own private company for public relations, called The DuVernay Agency. Her agency launched a number of networks for promotion and lifestyle, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
